Anowtalik’s swinging figures are usually referred to as “acrobats.” There is an Inuit tradition of gymnastics, games, and song contests often performed in a large, specially constructed communal igloo known as a qaggiq. Anowtalik’s whimsical imagination is best revealed in his antler works. These range from single acrobat figures, as seen here, to complex constructions consisting of a dozen or more animal, human, and spirit figures attached to sizeable bases. Swinging Acrobat has the simplicity and charm of a child’s toy, and is very much in the pinguaq (playful imitation) tradition in Arviat art.
