Hooded Tattooed Face with Motifs of Arctic Animals and Dagger reveals the hand of the artist, known to be regarded as an eccentric by his peers, that is both spontaneous and deliberate. The head’s hooded shape recalls the tautness of a water drop, while fine incised lines travel across the surface like drawn, meandering thoughts. The animal motifs appear both drawn and carved in low relief, every mark pulsing with intention and giving the work a real presence that invites questions: are these drawn-and-relief-carved animals, threatened by a knife, memories of past hunts or future journeys?
