JOHNNY IQULIQ (1966-1996) QAMANI'TUAQ (BAKER LAKE)
signed, "ᔭᓂ / ᐃᑯᓕ".
ESTIMATE: $400 — $600
The son of the great Tuna Iquliq (1935-2015), Johnny grew up in a carving family alongside his older sister, Camille (1962-2005). He was making a name for himself in the Inuit art world before his tragic death at age 30. While his works resemble those of both Camille and Tuna, they also owe an artistic debt to Qamani’tuaq sculptors Barnabus Arnasungaaq, Mathew Aqigaaq, and David Iqutaq. This sculpture depicts either a wolf or a sled dog at rest, its belly and limbs splayed across the ground in a natural, unguarded pose. The work is beautifully carved and polished; achieving such refinement from the hard local stone speaks to remarkable patience and skill.
