George Nelson was an accomplished Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw carver from Quatsino, British Columbia, best known for carving the house posts of the Sea Lion House in the collection of the Museum of Anthropology at UBC (MOA, A50009 d-f). Nelson was also a prolific maker of model totem poles and cedar chests, many of which are held in public institutions such as the Museum of Vancouver and the MOA. Nelson also worked with the anthropologist Edward Malin, who featured Nelson in his MA thesis and the book A World of Faces: Masks of the Northwest Coast (1978).
This charming pole features an Eagle over a Bear holding a Salmon. The wings of the Eagle are individually pegged in at an angle to create a sense of movement and drama. The pole is painted in red, black, and green and mounted on a subtly chamfered, wafer-like base.
