This argillite figure appears to be a fragment from a larger scene, perhaps off of a panel pipe or box. The main figure is a Swan or Goose that is prodding another figure that may be a cygnet, gosling, or even flatfish. It’s ambiguous because of the simplicity of the smaller figure. The larger Goose figure is much more ornate and complex, featuring a mix of Haida customary design and late-19th century scrollwork that recalls the nautical themes of Haida panel pipes of this era. The two-dimensional design of this piece is reminiscent of the aforementioned nautical panel pipes and the Haida group figures from this era, with dots, stippling, and diagonal lines being emphasized over formline design. The Goose and smaller figure are mounted on a narrow base with diagonal lines across the top. The bottom of the base features old lettering and doodles that may have been left by an earlier owner trying their hand at argillite carving.
