LATCHOLASSIE AKESUK (1919-2000) KINNGAIT (CAPE DORSET)
unsigned.
ESTIMATE: $3,500 — $5,000
Latcholassie Akesuk's Standing Hooded Figure is a distinctive example of the artist's sculptural practice. Akesuk is widely recognized for his blocky, expressive bird carvings (see Lot 38), as well as his intriguing transformation figures, in which birds acquire bear paws or bears emerge with human legs. This sculpture may belong to that curious category, though what exactly we are looking at remains evocatively ambiguous.
Here, a bulky, human-like figure stands upright, enveloped in a parka with its hood drawn up. His blocky, bowed legs, a characteristic found in other Akesuk sculptures, lend the figure a grounded, almost contemplative presence. The arms, however, appear distinctly nonhuman and may be the sculpture's only overt animal feature. What creature might they be referencing? Bear paws, diminutive bird wings, or perhaps seal flippers? With his almond-shaped, incised eyes turned skyward and a prominent carved nose, the figure seems suspended between bewilderment and quiet surrender, as though caught precisely in the moment of transformation.
