JOHN MICHAEL (1875-1942) TLINGIT, SITKA, ALASKA
unsigned.
ESTIMATE: $300 — $500
John Michael was a Sitka-based Tlingit carver known for his colourful model poles. Michael, along with his contemporaries David Konketah (1871-1925) and Charlie Bennett (1882-1949), helped create a distinctive, early-20th century Sitka-style of model poles. Michael’s poles always featured large, wide-muzzled heads, well-defined arms and legs, and monoxylous pedestals. He also had a relatively conservative, albeit colourful, palette of blue, black, and red. This pole, which likely dates to the 1930s, is carved in yellow cedar and features an Eagle over a Human figure, who is in turn sitting on a black pedestal.
