Mainland Nunavut, west of the Melville Peninsula, sits Kugaaruk, called Arviligjuaq in Inuktitut, “the great bowhead whale habitat,” a place long fed by the sea’s steady store. Marine life is entwined into local life and studio practice alike. Kugaaruk carvers are especially celebrated for small, finely finished ivory works, coveted by collectors for both their complexity and easy carrying. In the present work, the artist makes that bond plain and poetic: a pursuer and a seal pup, both in walrus ivory, set atop a stand of whale bone. Lovely.
