There is a feeling of movement that radiates from most works by Alex Janvier, and the present Green Spell is no exception. Vivid colour defines this painting as much as the deliberate calligraphic lines, both coming together to highlight a whirlpool of activity beginning to form on the canvas. Emphatic directions are splaying out from a central visual volume, a place where abstract shapes cluster together to grab the eye’s attention. There is a sense of energy amongst the veritable rumble of colour and forms. Despite everything that is going on, the scene fills the canvas pleasingly, and not to excess.
