Patrick Amos is a Mowachaht artist from Nootka Island, BC, who has worked since the late 1970s to revive and promote customary Nuu-chah-nulth art and styles. Early in his career, Amos studied under fellow Nuu-chah-nulth artists Tim Paul (b. 1950) and Art Thompson (1948-2003), both of whose influence is readily seen in his work. This mask, titled Otter Hunter Mask, is a compound image of a Sea Otter holding an Urchin over a Human face. The mask features a white underpaint that is contrasted with the red, green, and black details of the Sea Otter and Human face. The mask draws on historic Nuu-chah-nulth designs, with a thick, red-painted structure that encases the almond-shaped eyes and frames the nose and mouth of the Human. As in historic Nuu-chah-nulth works, Amos uses repeating rows of u-forms as primary design elements in the two-dimensional rendering of his mask. The composition is completed with the addition of hammered cedar bark, hair, and a feather attached to its proper left side.
