Goyce Kakegamic’s Turtles is spare and highly graphic. The two turtles float against the white paper, held by strong black outlines and animated by small passages of yellow, orange, red, and blue. The line work is direct and expressive: tapering tails, clawed feet, simple faces, and pale segmented shells. The two circular forms, joined by thin wandering lines, add a second note of mystery without crowding the image.
