The present Eagle was reproduced as the frontispiece for Marjorie Halpin’s Cycles: The Graphic Art of Robert Davidson, Haida.

In that publication, Halpin organizes Davidson’s prints into four phases — Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, and Artist — tracing his movement from close study of older Haida sources toward a more personal command of formline. Cycles is therefore not simply a survey, but a concise account of artistic development, showing how inherited design can be absorbed, challenged, and carried forward.

Within that framework, Eagle, 1979, holds a particularly important place. Halpin presents it as the signature print for the final phase, where Davidson’s imagery takes on a more personal dimension alongside its formal assurance. The work marks a point at which his command of Haida design is no longer defined by study or reinterpretation alone, but by clarity, compression, and full artistic authority.
