The depletion of North America’s great buffalo herds had far-reaching consequences, including the increasing use of cattle horn in place of the once-abundant buffalo horn for carving utensils and tools. The present ladle is one such example, deceptively simple yet deserving of admiration. Beautifully slender and delicate, it makes use of a broad section of horn to form a wide, shallow bowl. Its long, graceful handle culminates in a finely carved bird’s head with an open beak. Likely intended for serving rather than eating, this elegant utensil would surely have attracted an admiring eye at mealtime.
