Pipe bowls such as this one when added to a stem were unique to their purpose within their cultural group, marking war, peace, commerce and trade, and social and political decision-making. In the present lot, a raven or crow sits atop the platform, and fine lines have been carefully carved into the stone, defining talons, wings, and feathers. The pipe’s bowl is nestled into its back, almost hidden from view depending on the angle, and one can easily imagine smoke gently rising from it.
