Known for their intricacy and details, Pima basketry usually features black design work that is made by adding Devil's Claw, or Proboscidea parviflora, to the lighter willow or cattail stems. Devil's Claw grows wild throughout the Americas, but Tohono O’odham also (likely) domesticated the plant to ensure a consistent supply for weaving and as a food source, especially once ranching started to destroy the local wild habitat. The claws are dried and provide a strong, pliant fiber, which is then soaked in water and stripped into long strands used to construct baskets and provide the almost signature black color of Pima basketry. This work features a trio of the curve-armed crosses that each frame a block of zig zagging lines. A brief, repeating checkered pattern surrounds a solid black centre, while triangles adorn the upper rim, all in all making for a visually arresting work.
