As we have seen with recent offerings, small delicate handbags such as this one festooned with beads and rich velvets and trims were a canvas for their maker's designs and skill. Where one maker could utilize the same shape and patterns for the basics of the bag, there is always space for creativity and different features. This lot has raised beadwork set atop plush black velvet, itself already heavy with beads before the addition of beaded, loop fringe across the bottom edge for movement and sway. The upper portion of beading, an asymmetric mirroring of the vaguely floral design below it, is done upon an extra piece of velvet that acts as a flap to cover the upper part of the bag's body. Neatly hidden under it is a welt pocket, kept safe from view and prying fingers. This is both a selling point to anyone looking at the bag for themselves, and a tell of skill, as any sewist will tell you when it comes to making welt pockets!
