Leon Ridley is a Massett-based carver who apprenticed early in his career with master carvers Reg Davidson and Jim Hart. This charming model pole by Ridley depicts a single Bear figure that is mounted on a rectangular base. The diminutive Bear is unpainted and sculpted in yellow cedar, which allows the viewer to appreciate the crisp lines and clean carving. Measuring only about four inches tall, Ridley has infused it with a personality and presence that belie its actual stature. Like on some earlier model poles, Ridley has hollowed out the back.
