Born in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, Pat Dixon moved to Vancouver in 1966, where he worked alongside fellow Haida artist Pat McGuire. Dixon became closely associated with argillite, the dense black stone unique to Haida Gwaii, carving it with a precision well suited to its fine grain and lustrous surface. Here, a killer whale is shown upright, balanced on its flukes.
