Unangax̂ (Aleut) baskets are celebrated for the fineness of their weave, and this example makes that reputation immediately clear. Standing just 2.5 inches tall from base to knop, this miniature lidded basket condenses the technical sophistication of Unangax̂ basketry into a remarkably small form. Finely twined in prepared grass, its cylindrical body is ornamented with a bold red starburst and punctuated by small blue embroidered motifs, introducing vivid colour and a strong graphic presence without overwhelming the basket’s delicacy.
