As the son of famed artist Joe David, it is little wonder that Douglas David took to carving from a young age. Between years of study under his father and contemporaries, and the business side of art from his mother (Sandra Tulfua), Douglas's carving gained considerable acclaim as one of the most admired Nuu-chah-nulth contemporary carvers. Primarily inspired by his ancestral spirits, he has a myriad of styles and colours he uses to create masks, panels, paddles, boxes, rattles and bowls, and given his broad combination of cultural influences, his work has a very distinctive style and appearance. In Coastal Moon Mask, one can almost see the influence of the early summers spent in Tofino with his father reflected in the wood. The moon's face peeks out from the wood, while layers of white paint show the ripples of water reflecting in the night. A subtle layer of sparkly paint in the moon's eyes give further life and depth to the work, like a flickering light in the sky.
