Much of the charm of this miniature family grouping lies in the distinct personalities of its three figures and the careful attention paid to their clothing. The central man wears a cylindrical cap and a parka with simple incised decoration, while the woman's amautiq, with its generously rounded hood and decorated apron, presents a more elaborate silhouette. Subtle variations in stance, expression, and touches of pigment give each figure a personality of its own. Made within Labrador's longstanding tradition of ivory carving, these small sculptures demonstrate considerable skill and sensitivity in their portrayal of familiar people and dress, while also reflecting a growing market for such miniature works among visitors and collectors.
