JOHN LIVINGSTON (1951-2019), NON-INDIGENOUS, ADOPTED KWAKWA̱KA̱ʼWAKW
signed, titled, and dated, "John Livingston / Kwakiutl Halibut / feast dish / 71".
ESTIMATE: $2,500 — $3,500
As mentioned in Lot 46, John Livingston was a non-Indigenous carver who worked with the Hunt family for over fifty years. Like the Human/Frog dish in the previous Lot 46, this Halibut dish was made early in Livingston's career for Arts of the Raven, the gallery and workshop he opened with Tony Hunt Sr. in Victoria, BC. A subtle but effective design choice in this work is how the pectoral fin overlaps the split-U spines on the side of the dish, helping imbue the bowl with life and movement. While some artists struggle with Halibut forms because of their inherent complexity and asymmetry, here Livingston used that oddness to let his skills as a designer shine.
