An accomplished observer of Arctic wildlife, Paulassie Pootoogook returned repeatedly to animal subjects throughout his long sculptural career. In Owl Feeding, the bird crouches close over its prey, broad wings lifted high above a squat, compact body. The pose gives a familiar Kinngait subject unusual tension and immediacy, catching the owl in the act of feeding rather than at rest. Fine incisions score the plumage and sharpen the face, while the low, spreading form gives the sculpture a dense, forceful presence. Pootoogook combines close observation with bold simplification, allowing surface, silhouette, and stance to carry the drama of the encounter.
