Shandley Williams was a member of the Williams family of model totem pole carvers, most known for their association with the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop. Although strongly associated with Seattle, members of the family have historically moved back and forth between British Columbia and Washington State, with this pole apparently having been carved in Alert Bay, on Cormorant Island, in BC. Sculpturally, this pole is a classic iteration of the Williams style, with deep cuts outlining the forms and large white teeth. The style does depart a bit in terms of the fine details, such as the segmented eyebrows on the figures and the muted palette of brown, red, white, and green paint. The pole features a Thunderbird with a Frog emerging from an anthropomorphic face over a Bear holding a Human figure. The base is chamfered with an incised circle and trigon pattern on the front side.
