In Untitled (Trotting Wolf, Calling Out), Kenojuak Ashevak gives the animal an almost theatrical presence. Its long body cuts across the page in a single sweeping movement, while the raised head, open jaws and carefully placed legs make the wolf appear caught mid-stride and mid-call.

The coloured pencil is handled with exceptional control, building the coat through soft, uneven layers rather than flat blocks of tone. This gives the body weight without losing the drawing’s graphic force. Behind it, the spotted mountains rise like patterned forms, their bold black markings playing against the restrained brown and blue-grey colouring of the wolf and landscape.
