Spanning across Canada, Birchbark etching has been practiced by many Indigenous peoples in Canada, including the Dene, Anishinaabe, and nations in the Wabanaki Confederacy. Like many of its quilled and woven brethren, baskets such as the present lot were both functional vessels that could be adorned with patterns and floral motifs, and souvenirs made for trade. With the body of the basket sporting a simpler, crossed line pattern, the lid repeats curled lines and directional points around a square. Well space stitches hold the lid to its rim, and the basket’s body to its base, finishing a simple and elegant work.
