Originally taught by her mother Winnie Tatya, Gloria Inugaq Putumiraqtuq is known for her almost emblematic portrayals of arctic wildlife and life on the tundra. Gloria’s who’s who does have the fantastical and spiritual as well, and they make their appearances subtly. Extra appendages sprout from fish, hands begin to replace flippers, and the shaman’s arms begin to multiply. In the present work, cut forms are spread across a grey ground, stitched into place and overlaid with coloured and variegated threads. A lone bird stands in the centre, oblivious to the more fantastical creatures around it, or perhaps itself one of those fantastic creatures, still hidden away from view.
