Created in 1999, the year Nunavut officially became a territory, Tulugaq Nunavummi (Raven of Nunavut) turns one of Kenojuak Ashevak’s most familiar subjects into a work of celebration and display. A small, solid raven sits at the centre of an extravagant spray of feathers, their curling forms fanning outward like petals or plumes. Against the dense black body, the surrounding colour seems to flare and float, giving the bird a presence far larger than its compact form. Pattern, symmetry, and repetition transform a familiar Arctic subject into something festive and fantastical. Commissioned for this significant year and printed by Qavavau Manumie, the work belongs to Kenojuak’s mature period, when her birds and beasts had become among the most recognized images of Kinngait graphic art.
