ESTIMATE: $2,000 — $3,000
While a leading member of the "second generation" of Indigenous artists influenced by Norval Morrisseau, Blair Debassige should, rightly, be recognized for his own stylistic range in graphic art. As an accomplished painter, he was able to expand upon the visual language established by Morrisseau, defining a new lexicon for his own work. Here, in Sacred Pipe Ceremony, appendages morph from a central, pictographic-esque figure, while fine, cord-like lines link it to surrounding circular forms, recalling Morrisseau's "lines of communication." The repeated contours and radiating appendages created by Debassige give a strong sense of movement through the composition, despite its static nature. As a nod to Manitoulin, the scene unfolds before the setting sun on a shoreline, the colours bright behind all the commotion up front.
