In contrast to a statically carved raven rattle, this Hamatsa Raven Rattle-Clapper can almost speak for itself by design. Much like its larger brethren in the Raven mask, this clapper rattle has two partially hollowed out halves, with one that is hinged as a lower jaw to the larger upper beak and head. With simple movement, the wood strikes itself with a loud clack, a voice from the wood. Similarly to the larger masks, this rattle features a spray of cedar bark hair, both on top of Raven’s head and coming down from his chin. In the Hamatsa ceremony, an enactment mapping the struggle between chaotic, destructive, and civilized forces, Raven’s loud clacking can represent the equally loud, terrifying presence of the supernatural world.
