This interesting argillite sculpture features a Medicine Man (or Shaman) holding a Child over a Killer Whale sitting on its flukes. The pole appears to be a transitional piece between a full Shaman figure and a model pole, which implies that it was made in the earlier half of the suggested timeframe. There are other features that point to an earlier date as well, such as the hollowed back and the “compass dots” in the centre of the figures’ eyes, which connect this pole to earlier figural group carvings. This pole is purported to have been a gift from Emily Carr to the great-grandmother of the current owner, providing a fascinating provenance for the piece.
