Aoudla Pudlat’s command of coloured pencil is immediately apparent in the bird’s plumage. Mauve, purple, pink, blue, green, and dense black are built up in soft, saturated layers, giving the feathers a surface that feels plush in places and tightly packed in others. The body seems almost to swell with colour.
From that dense centre, the wings spread outward in a broad fan, enlarging the bird into a formidable presence. Its head is thrown upward, the beak open in a sharp call, and the whole figure seems caught at the height of display. Whether defensive or courtship related, the gesture is charged with force.
Pudlat sharpens the edges of the beak and feathers while allowing the broader passages of colour to soften and merge. The effect is both precise and sensuous, with firmness at the perimeter and softness across the body. The bird appears powerful, alert, and fully animated by its own physical presence.
Artists such as Kananginak Pootoogook have rightly been celebrated for their depictions of Arctic flora and fauna, but Pudlat remains comparatively underappreciated. Works such as this make a compelling case for the strength, sophistication, and singularity of his drawing.
