Tim Pitsiulak’s fascination with Arctic wildlife extended beyond living animals to the bones, tusks, tracks, and remains that speak of their presence. In Ancient Walrus Skull, a weathered skull is examined with almost archaeological intensity. Its broad bone surfaces, deep cavities, and great curving tusks are rendered with close attention to weight and wear, while the tusks themselves are covered with finely incised designs recalling early Inuit ivory engraving. Ochres, umbers, and softened browns stain the surface with a sense of age, as though the skull has been handled, buried, exposed, and weathered over time. Set against a spare, softly modulated ground, it assumes the solidity of sculpture and the charged presence of an excavated object. Pitsiulak brings anatomy, hunting history, and the material memory of Inuit culture into a single, resonant image.
