ESTIMATE: $400 — $600
Kananginak Pootoogook was a keen and exacting observer of Arctic wildlife, and birds remained a favourite subject throughout his graphic career. Oopik, Inuktitut for owl, presents the bird in profile, its compact body poised on slender, carefully drawn feet. Dense patterning defines the darker wings and tail, while fine stippling softens the rounded breast and gives the plumage a palpable, downy surface. Nothing is overstated. Kananginak builds the bird through small distinctions of texture, shape, and stance, preserving the physical specificity of an owl while giving it a distinct presence and personality.
