Pitaloosie Saila’s Proud Bird confirms her place as a draughtsman of the first order, and her coloured pencil work remains, in our opinion, seriously underappreciated. Fine strokes gather across the plumage, shifting from firm contour to soft shading and giving the bird a surface that seems feathered, full, and almost tactile.

The composition is equally accomplished. Pitaloosie gives the bird ample space and lets its form command the sheet, its lifted posture and carefully shaped silhouette lending it a palpable sense of pride. Colour is used sparingly but with purpose, allowing the subtle modulation of pencil and the strength of the drawing itself to carry the image. The result is poised, stately, and superbly controlled.
