JOSIE PAMIUTU PAPIALUK (1918-1996) PUVIRNITUQ (POVUNGNITUK)
stonecut, 15.25 x 21 in (38.7 x 53.3 cm)
34/50
ESTIMATE: $350 — $500
This print is an especially fine example of Papialuk’s work. The surface of the stone, and in turn the printed image, becomes a crowded field of incident. Birds, a subject to which the artist returned often, wheel, perch, plunge, and pass through passages of dense black and open paper. At right, an oval enclosure contains another bird, while below it small figures and animals gather in compact clusters, almost like images nested inside images.
Conventional scale and perspective matter little here. Papialuk gives each form the space and emphasis it needs, allowing the composition to spread outward from the central man in a sequence of sudden shifts, small surprises, and sharply separated scenes. What makes the print so satisfying is the way he sustains such visual abundance without letting the image dissolve into confusion. The eye moves easily from figure to bird, from black mass to bare ground, from one small episode to the next, held throughout by Papialuk’s bold sense of shape and placement.
