JOE TALIRUNILI (1893-1976) PUVIRNITUQ (POVUNGNITUK)
stonecut, 17 x 19 in (43.2 x 48.3 cm)
28/45
ESTIMATE: $400 — $600
Joe Talirunili crowds Ready for the Hunt with the bustle and business of camp life. Tents, hunters, dogs, kayaks, and broad skin boats scatter across the sheet, each small incident pressing against the next. Figures bend, pull, paddle, prepare, and pass through the scene, so that several moments seem to happen at once. Black, green, and blue sharpen the silhouettes and separate boat, body, and shelter, while Talirunili’s abbreviated figures retain an almost wiry animation. The result is less a single episode than a sweep of remembered activity, dense with dogs, boats, bodies, and the shared work of setting out for the hunt.
