Born near Kinngait, Eliyakota Samualie began creating art in the 1960s, eventually producing elegant, finely detailed drawings and prints of birds and fish that would become her calling card throughout her career. With a wash of colour and lines, her intricate compositions have both a high level of detail and sweeping movement, despite the static nature of the medium. In the present drawing, a lone central bird splays its feathers to fantastical effect to cover the page. Gentle waves can be seen in their stems, while pops of white and black crown each feather like an arrow, pointing the way. A slim body lies in the centre, with two graceful feet below, as if this magnificent bird flies above us, both showing off and making its way out.
