In what was a sadly brief, but memorable, artistic career, Meelia Kelly left behind a delightful canon of lively and playful images. Birds were a favourite subject that were returned to time and time again, both fantastical and natural in representations. The present drawing adds another flying creature to its central, singular bird, the infamous northern mosquito. The bird seems to shake and flutter before our eyes in a vain effort to shake off the battalion of mosquitos lining its wings, the squawk of displeasure almost audible from the paper.
