BARNABUS ARNASUNGAAQ (1924-2017) QAMANI'TUAQ (BAKER LAKE)
signed, "ᐊᓄᓱᒐ".
ESTIMATE: $3,000 — $5,000
Without diminishing his later career, there is something especially satisfying about encountering Barnabus at the height of his power. He carved across many decades, well into old age, and such a long career naturally brought variation. In this early work, however, Barney’s hand feels fresh, forceful, and fully engaged.
The modelling of this Striding Muskox is especially fine. Here, the artist builds the animal from swelling, compact forms, a broad hump, thick shoulders, sharply cut haunches, and a wonderfully rounded little rear. Low-slung and squat, but never cumbersome, it carries its bulk with surprising animation. One foreleg lifts, the head turns, and the whole body seems to trot forward into its next step. The result is an affectionate, closely observed study of weight, muscle, and movement.
