In Anowtalik's Mother with Child in her Amautiq, tenderness is expressed through the simplest of sculptural gestures. The broad curve of the amauti hood sweeps into the woman's folded arms, enclosing mother and child within a single, softly rounded form. Snugly sheltered in the hood, the baby peers upward with the suggestion of a smile, its small face emerging from the surrounding stone. Anowtalik's sculptures are often spare, even severe, in their simplification, but here the familiar austerity gives way to tenderness. One wonders whether the subject was drawn from life, perhaps Mary Ayaq Anowtalik, his wife and fellow carver, carrying one of their children.
