Born in 1959 in Kugluktuk, NU, Helen Kaloon began sewing at a young age, first learning from her mother when she was eight years old. At the root of her sewing practice and creative journey is both clothing and doll production, but perhaps what she is best known for “down south” are her wall hangings. Carefully hand cut from felt and fur, and stitched in with dense zigzag stitches, her works have an innate life and character to them. In the present example, seals twist and turn around a central Sedna figure, herself clad in a lush coat with a furry hood. Lines run from Sedna’s hands, keeping the seals tethered and close by, despite their splayed flippers likely kicking them forward in the water. While it may seem like her face if hidden, a gentle sweep of the hood’s fur reveals stitched features, keeping warm from the icy arctic waters.
