This small carving has proved surprisingly difficult to place with certainty. Its materials, handling and subject suggest Alaska, possibly Nunivak Island, where artists of the period produced similar works in driftwood, although close comparisons remain elusive. Whatever its origins, the creature is squat, solid, and full of character, gripping its catch with an almost comic seriousness. Its pebbled, incised surface lends the carving a wonderfully tactile quality.
