UNIDENTIFIED NORTHWEST COAST ARTIST
unsigned.
ESTIMATE: $800 — $1,200
Feasting and the use of decorated dishes and utensils are cornerstones of Northwest Coast ceremonial life. Alongside baskets and totem poles, models of feast dishes have been made and sold to tourists on the Northwest Coast since the late 19th century. This figural Frog bowl, perhaps Tlingit, features a proportionately large head, huge eyes, and wide mouth with reduced front and back legs. Another interesting aspect of this Frog bowl is its total coverage in green, red, and black paints, with only implied formal design elements built into the sculpting of the legs and head.
