This older argillite model pole features a Dogfish Woman over a Beaver holding a chewstick. The dramatic Dogfish Woman figure is depicted on her head with a large labret in her lower lip, pectoral and dorsal fins, and an asymmetrical caudal fin with a longer upper lobe than lower lobe. [1] The faces on this pole are especially well sculpted, with large, orbed eyes, elegantly curled nostrils, and finely carved lips and teeth. There are several features that may indicate this pole is older, such as the hollowed-out back and the rows of stippling on the Dogfish Woman’s body. The pole is mounted on a chamfered argillite base.

1. This type of asymmetrical caudal fin is called a heterocercal structure. Now you can have that in your pocket for your next trivia night.
