TOM MOSES (1872-1955), COAST SALISH, SQUAMISH
unsigned.
ESTIMATE: $2,500 — $3,500
This substantial model pole, carved by Squamish artist Tommy Moses, presents a succession of boldly carved figures, including Thunderbird, Grizzly Bear, and Killer Whale. Alongside Mathias Joe Capilano (1887-1966), Moses was among a select few Coast Salish artists producing both monumental and model poles during the first half of the 20th century. Exceptionally large and solidly carved, this example is especially appealing for its generous proportions, spirited arrangement of figures and the playful, sometimes whimsical character that distinguishes Moses's work.
