NANCY KABLUTSIAK TASSEOR (1935-2015) ARVIAT (ESKIMO POINT)
signed, "ᑲᓗᓯᐊ".
ESTIMATE: $1,000 — $1,500
If the preceding Lot 164 by her kinswoman, Lucy Tasseor, can be read as a monument to motherhood, the present work by Nancy Kablutsiak Tasseor offers something of a more slice of everyday life variety, rendered with a sensitivity to all its familiar fuss and affection. Here, a young mother appears to be preparing for the day, hands raised to tend to her hair, while an unruly child clambers about her knees. Another, nestled in her amaut (hood) at her back, stretches his or her small arms outward, seemingly eager to join their sibling in the commotion. Caught between the competing demands of her children and the simple business of getting herself ready, the mother nevertheless smiles sweetly, her expression suggesting a mixture of patience, pleasure, and amusement.
