Drawn in the early 2000s, this vibrant camp scene by Shuvinai Ashoona offers a compelling glimpse into life on the land. Inside a tent, a group of figures dressed in colourful parkas, hats, and other garments gather to enjoy tea. The composition is particularly striking: the tent's expansive areas of negative space balance the colourful figures, seemingly cradling them within its shelter. Beneath them, the Arctic ground comes alive with green and brown pebbles, birds' eggs, leaves, and flowers, the fleeting delights of a Kinngait summer.
The drawing also bears a notable affinity with the interior scenes of Ashoona's cousin, Annie Pootoogook, whose work explored the rhythms of contemporary Inuit domestic life. Created around 2004-05, when Pootoogook's distinctive approach to interiors was gaining recognition, Ashoona's inclusion of tea and a Coleman stove invites consideration of the artistic dialogue between the two cousins. Such shared motifs suggest how ideas and influences circulated within Kinngait's close-knit artistic community.
