This weaving bears the official tag of the Salish Weavers Guild, which was established in 1971, in the unceded territory of Coast Salish or Stó:lō First Nations, in Sardis, BC. The design, materials and finishing are within a range of weaving styles produced by Guild members for sale to the public between the late 1960s and early 1980s. The warp is commercially spun wool, and the weft is hand spun. The wefts appear to be a combination of natural and hand-dyed sheep's wool. The piece is twine woven (two weft threads twisted around individual warps) with an alternating pitch. The geometric stars, linked diamonds and stacked triangle borders in gold and natural white are designs customarily used by Salish weavers.

Alison Ariss

Alison Ariss is a settler art historian and doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia specializing in Salish weaving and Indigenous art history. Working collaboratively with expert Salish weavers, her research examines the cultural, political, and historical significance of weavings installed in public spaces. Her work foregrounds Indigenous knowledge, challenges conventional art historical narratives, and explores relationships between artistic practice and colonial institutions.
