Gideon Qaunqjuak is a distinguished Inuk sculptor from Taloyoak (formerly Spence Bay), Nunavut, who creates exceptional stone carvings that explore shamanistic motifs and Arctic spirituality. He specializes in stone and makes works that reflect themes of transformation, depicting shamanic animals in dynamic states of change and spirits that emerge from the medium with a powerful presence. His sculptures convey the interplay between human and animal forms and integrate elements of both humour and mysticism. This notable work features an upright gull with one wing that resembles a marine mammal’s flipper, positioned in a gesture reminiscent of human movement, a refined representation of the convergence of human, animal, and spiritual domains.
